About Master's in Development Practice (MDP), University of Malaya

The University of Malaya, Malaysia's oldest and premier institution of higher learning, is the first institution in Southeast Asia to offer the Master’s in Development Practice (MDP) program . The university with its 20 faculties, academies, centres and institutes offers in excess of 100 postgraduate programs for both local and international students. It has produced several generations of prominent leaders for the public, private, political and academic spheres and continues to develop intrinsic academic strengths through trans-disciplinary and cutting-edge research in disciplines ranging from the Arts and Social Sciences to the Natural Sciences.

The MDP is managed by the Centre for Poverty and Development Studies (CPDS) in the Faculty of Economics and Administration. CPDS was established in 2006 as the national centre for poverty and development studies and has acted as a critical reference point for academic and outreach activities on poverty and development. It offers policy inputs to government, undertakes academic and action research and provides consultancy services . CPDS acts as the platform for promoting dialogue among academic , private and public and civil society stakeholders. The Royal Professor Ungku Aziz Chair in poverty studies is also managed by CPDS.

The two-year MDP, designed to develop core competencies in development practitioners, will have a South East Asian orientation reflected in its student cohorts and academic inputs in terms of contributions to the overall MDP program as well as teaching and supervisory resources. Its pedagogic outcomes will add value to core knowledge, program management skills and exposure to sustainable management practices of its graduates.

The MDP comprises 18 core 3-credit courses spread over four semesters of the University of Malaya academic calendar, four non-credit courses on Integrated Approaches to Sustainable Development, and three pre-requisite, non-credit courses. A structured field work program will complement the academic foundations of the MDP program.... More Info
